Monumental
Handprinted Woodblock by Ralph Kiggell
Until Feb. 29 at La Lanta Fine Art |
| |
In this new series of woodblock prints, Ralph Kiggell describes towers and sites that have both a concrete and mystical appeal to him. Towers draw people towards them and entice them to go up.
|
| |
Pagodas, spires, columns and minarets mark the places where man has been and where we try to rise spiritually and physically above our everyday existence.
At the same time, we build tower-blocks and skyscrapers ever higher, and send rockets, satellites and missiles into space. |
| |
Kiggell uses the traditional medium of woodblock printing to create these images of ancient and modern monuments.
These works are printed from carved woodblocks using water-based pigments on Japanese paper.
The whole process is carried out by hand, giving the prints a special sensitivity. |
| |
One of Kiggell's work from this series is selected to be shown at the art exhibition in China in conjuction with the Beijing Olympic 2008.
